The musician contributes twenty-five thousand pounds cash award to small live spaces

The artist holding Mercury Prize in Newcastle
Sam Fender won the prestigious award recently in the North East

The artist has handed over the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound award prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to save the United Kingdom's grassroots music venues.

The star was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his new release his work was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his initial steps.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I played around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by adding a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous local spots across the UK.

The donation supported spaces that were dealing with possible closure due to issues arising from flooding, fires and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations received monetary aid in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that directly benefitted artists and fans.

"The notion that revenue from performances in big venues helps the local stages, where it all starts for performers like me, is just common sense," Fender has said.

The musician is among several artists to donate his honor funds to charitable organizations.

When the band earned the trophy in the year 1996 for their release the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would give their cash to the non-profit the charity.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her prize between a few good causes, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required updated gear," the artist shared with a publication.

Previously, the band donated their winnings to the youth organization that developed their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And winners that year the group contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a friend was identified with the illness.

"The victory was sufficient," remarked artist the singer. "The prize was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted another person's life."

In the past week, the trust announced it had rescued a couple of local spots in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in that area and the second in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by a national body and music fans who buy "shares" in the buildings.
