Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
